Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

It's fair to say that when we think of Halloween, horror and scary movies, we don’t automatically think about Harry PotterMost of us associate the series with happiness (because obviously), but there were actually some pretty creepy moments in the books – and once they were re-imagined onto the big screen, they became the stuff of nightmares.

So button up your cloaks as we count down the top 10 scariest moments in the Harry Potter movies!

When Voldemort's Head Was On The Back Of Quirrell's Head

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

Like something straight out of a horror flick, Voldemort attached himself to the back of Professor Quirrell’s head.  So Harry had to deal with a lot for an 11-year-old, including going face-to-face-to-face with both Voldemort AND a crazy professor who let someone attach their head to the back of his. Talk about disturbing.

Aragog

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

Meet Aragog ! He's a giant spider, and he tries to eat Ron and Harry, despite the fact that Hagrid specifically asked him not to.

As Ron says "why follow the spiders? Why not follow the butterflies?".  Harry and Ron delve back into the scary, forbidden forest only to be greeted by thousands of spiders - HUGE and hostile spiders - who want to eat them. It's not exactly anyone's favourite scene is it? Hell no, JK.

The Basilisk hided in the Chamber of Secrets

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world is full of magical creatures, both the cute and cuddly and the terrifically terrifying. The Chamber of Secrets introduces one of the most dangerous creatures of all, the basilisk. Huge, venomous, and fast, the basilisk’s fang ends up coming in handy in the following years, but its scene in the chamber is so frightening that even Tom Riddle gets a little nervous.

Dementors

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

In an attempt to protect Hogwarts from the notorious criminal Sirius Black, someone thought it was a good idea to use Dementors as police guards. Not only are Dementors appearance terrifying with their long black cloaks and creepy faces, but they also exude sadness and can end someone's life in the most petrifying way. They live off hope and suck it from people,  isn't that the most adorable creature on earth ! Quite difficult to sleep soundly after seeing these horrible creatures.

When Voldemort Rises Again

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

The fourth book/movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire pretty much divides the series between dark, and SUPER SUPER dark. From the opening scene with poor Frank Bryce's murder, to Wormtail chopping off his arm and taking blood from Harry to resurrect you-know-who, the whole thing is totally disturbing. Sure, we caught glimpses of him in past films, but his regeneration in The Goblet of Fire is by far the scariest of all.Take a look to the picture if you still have doubts.

When Nagini Attacks Arthur Weasley

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

In The Order Of The Phoenix you thought that this was the end for Arthur Weasley. Harry's dreams were becoming a lot more vivid and frightening at this point and it looked as though Voldemort was gaining in powers, alongside his death toll. The creepiest part about this encounter is that Harry sees everything through Nagini's eyes: he feels as if he's responsible for the attack on Arthur Weasley, but also feels powerless to stop it. Scary stuff.

Inferi

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

As Snape says in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: “The Inferius is a corpse that has been reanimated by a Dark wizard’s spells. It is not alive, it is merely used like a puppet to do the wizard's bidding." Um, terrifying much?

Voldemort needed an army and his disregard for human life meant that he had no trouble sleeping when it came to waking the dead and using them as soldiers. Inferi are reanimated corpses, zombies if you will, of those who have passed away and Voldemort isn't giving them their right to rest in peace.

Imagine sleeping in your bed at night with these guys crawling towards your door. No thank you.

Bathilda Bagshot

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

Finally, an ally to give Harry and Hermione information!

But wait, something doesn't seem right here. The chapter seemed elongated with the tension and Jk was throwing clues at you with Bathilda's strange behaviour, her inability to speak and the state of her house, but you didn't want to believe it. It was Christmas Eve and all they had was each other, they didn't deserve to be in such danger.

But seeing as how it's the Deathly Hallows and anything goes, of course it was Bagshot's corpse being possessed by a giant snake. Why JK, why?

When Bellatrix tortured Hermione

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry PotterHearing Hermione's screams as Bellatrix tortures her is torture in and of itself.

Hogwart’s battle

Top 10 of the scariest moments in Harry Potter

No one was safe. You probably scanned each page looking for names just to see who was still alive and battling on. And then you came across Fred...

And then Remus...

And Tonks...

The battle of Hogwarts was without a doubt, the most emotional part of the entire series as well as the most frightening. All of your beloved characters were fighting for what was right and some of them were getting killed for it. Kind of depressing.
