Chocolate Frog recipe for Sorting ceremony
Hello wizarding fellas. Settle yourself comfortably in a sofa beside your fireplace (Incendio!) and be prepared to a recipe filled with magic!
First thing first, a special thanks to our friend La Pipelette de Paris who share this recipe with us. You can find her original recipe in French here.
Being here reading this article, we assume that you are at least somehow related to the magical world. It means that at some point of your life, you might be thinking of organizing a Harry Potter theme party.
Now wizarding friends, we all know this trouble with the less magical community - not everyone knows which Hogwarts house they belong to. While it would be hard to ask every guest to take the Pottermore test beforehand, and let alone inviting the Sorting Hat all the way from Hogwarts just for a party, why not create your own sorting ceremony in a fun way with Chocolate Frogs. You will very soon be able to sort your guests into the Hogwarts house they belong to: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
(If you want to try your luck motivating your guests anyway, here's the link to the test)
In case you are wondering if we are thinking of the same kind of Chocolate Frog, yes - we are talking about the one that has only got one good jump to begin with. If we are on the same page, let’s get started with these special sorting Chocolate Frogs with marshmallow filling in the colors of the 4 Hogwarts houses.
Ingredients
Chocolate Shell
- Milk Couverture chocolate (around 35/40% cacao)
- Chocolate Frog mold
Marshmallow
- 125g sugar
- 25g honey
- 50g water
- 2 egg white
- 8g gelatin (or 4 sheets)
- Food coloring: red, yellow, blue, green
Steps
Chocolate shell
Before we start making the chocolate, just a little advice on your choice of chocolate: avoid using baking chocolate from department stores. This kind of chocolate is not going to work with this recipe. You are strongly recommended to use couverture chocolate which contains less sugar and more cacao butter. The chocolate would be more fluid and will hence facilitate the molding. Couverture chocolate can be found in specialized grocery stores.
Back to the recipe, start with melting your chocolate. If possible, always favor the tempering method to give your chocolate a shining and flawless look. If you are not familiar with the technique, learn more about it here
Once tempered, fill your mold carefully and then turn the mold up-side-down and place it on a grill above a plaque to get rid of the excess chocolate. This way you will get a nice and thin chocolate shell. Once the chocolate stops running, turn the mold back and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Marshmallow
In a saucepan, pour in water, sugar and honey and bring the mixture to 121C. In the meantime, soak your sheets into a big bowl of cold water. Next, in another big mixing bowl, start beating your egg white until it becomes foamy.
Once the mixture in the saucepan brought to boil, squeeze the gelatin and add it to the saucepan while stirring. Then, pour carefully the syrup on the beaten egg whites while you continue beating.
Stop whisking once your mixing bowl has cooled down and that your meringue is compact.
Lastly separate the meringue into 4 bowls and add food coloring to obtain your marshmallow in red, yellow, blue and green.
Assembly
Take your mold out of the fridge. Fill each shell with the marshmallow, smooth it well and put it back to the fridge. Let chill for 2 hours, the marshmallow should harden a little bit more. It is now time to finish the coating.
Melt your chocolate again and cover your meringue with this mixture. Let chill in the fridge for one last time and your Chocolate Frog should be ready to be unmolded now.
It’s now time to think of the decoration. Make use of the Chocolate Frog boxes and the Wizarding cards that come with your mold for the best magical result.
Attention everybody, the Sorting ceremony is now starting. If you are not familiar with the characters of each house:
“You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.”
